SOFT ERROR

Solo show with Janosch Jauch

opening Friday, 21.3.2025, 6-9pm

In Soft Error, Jauch develops an immersive installation that explores the play of light and shadow. The themes are compositions with everyday objects that sometimes appear on the banks of the Rhine, where he experiments with transitions of light and matter. Analog photography plays a central role in this context. Jauch reflects on mistakes, unpredictability and the organic quality of this medium, which he consciously transfers into his installation.

Soft Error is an installation created by Janosch Jauch especially for wildpalms. Through a narrow, three-meter-long corridor, visitors are immersed in a world of shadows and reflections created by warm light, exploring the creative processes and design possibilities associated with artistic production.
When the shadows are projected onto the roof of our houses or onto the curtains and the wind moves the branches of the trees from which these shadows emanate, we are immersed in a fictional world:
A 4-minute movie runs in the background at 100 frames per second, in which a sculpture made of branches and objects bursts into flames: the smoke and flames, detailed thanks to the quality of the image, form an exact dance on the background of the sunset on the banks of the Rhine.
An aquarium refers to the baroque fountain of the Palermo botanical garden, which dialogues with the painted surface of a mechanical amusement park of a funfair, while a slide projector does not illuminate an image, but the reflections of the water and the glass of the aquarium. The moments of recreation that run through human life have not changed over the centuries.

In the middle of the room is a stage on which a plant world installed in front of projectors casts its shadows on two pieces, forming a path along which the spectator, passing by and illuminated, becomes part of the work. He changes it by looking at the still lifes, which are made up of images that we recognize.
One of the questions we ask ourselves when we come into contact with art is how a work of art becomes reality. Apart from the question of technique, we all, the viewers, admire the processes of artistic creation that make us reflect on different aspects of our existence. How to show this moment of process and at the same time make it experimental on the level of the body?
Jauch exposes the images and searches for a multitude of references she might have. Be it in the immense library of images we have from art history or in the popular media, as well as in images that appear out of nowhere, in random cases like the banana that appears in the photograph, while at the same time affirming the will to create: as in the still lifes where old shoes play an important role.
