Janosch Jauch: SOFT ERROR

In Soft Error, Jauch develops an immersive installation that explores the play of light and shadow. Its themes emerge from compositions of everyday objects found along the banks of the Rhine, where he experiments with transitions between light and matter. Analog photography plays a central role: Jauch consciously transfers its errors, unpredictability and organic qualities into the installation.

Soft Error is an installation created by Janosch Jauch especially for wildpalms. Through a narrow, three-metre-long corridor, visitors are immersed in a world of shadows and reflections created by warm light, exploring the creative processes and design possibilities associated with artistic production.

When shadows are projected onto the roofs of our houses or onto curtains, and the wind moves the branches of the trees from which those shadows emerge, we enter a fictional world.

A four-minute film runs in the background at 100 frames per second. A sculpture made of branches and objects bursts into flames; the smoke and fire, captured in detail, form a precise dance against the sunset on the banks of the Rhine.

An aquarium refers to the Baroque fountain in Palermo’s botanical garden and enters into dialogue with the painted surface of a mechanical fairground attraction. A slide projector illuminates not an image but the reflections of water and glass. The moments of recreation that run through human life have not changed over the centuries.

At the centre of the room, a plant world installed in front of projectors casts its shadows onto two works. The resulting path allows the illuminated viewer to become part of the installation and transform it while looking at still lifes made from recognisable images.

One of the questions we ask when encountering art is how a work becomes reality. Beyond technique, we admire processes of artistic creation that invite reflection on different aspects of our existence. How can this moment of process be revealed while also becoming a bodily experiment?

Jauch exposes images and searches for the multitude of references they might contain, whether in art history’s immense visual library, in popular media or in images that appear through chance. A banana entering a photograph can affirm the will to create, just as old shoes take on an important role in a still life.

Janosch Jauch (born 1985 in Karlsruhe, Germany) lives and works in Düsseldorf. He graduated in sculpture and painting from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2014, where he studied with Georg Herold, Andreas Gursky and Ludger Schwarte.
