SIX OF SWORDS. Diaspora and Image

Église in Palermo is an internationally renowned center for photography. Through exhibitions, publications, and framework program presents the Mediterranean as a place of diasporic, where paths cross and culture emerges.

Six of Swords: Diaspora and Image is an exhibition featuring Karen Paulina Biswell, Iole Carollo, Michele Vaccaro, a performance by Rachel Libeskind, and more tba, is an exhibition that reflects on diaspora.

The works are based on classical documentary photography, but question its meaning, the power of photographers, the creation of visual worlds in the face of environmental and political crisis.

The exhibition and performance reflects on the role of photography and images produced by photography, on their power and reception, how this can be rethought through diaspora.
Together with Eglise, however, we especially want to reflect on the diasporic in the Mediterranean, where many cultures intersect and cross-fertilize. The tarot card Six of Swords represents those who have to leave their homeland for various reasons. It is a minor arcana card that represents overcoming difficulties, healing, relief and stability.

Although old questions are asked about photography and the photographic image, this time it is artists who lived or experienced diaspora who answer or contextualize such questions.

The problems of representing other cultures (the ethnographic gaze) are discussed, as the work with the indigenous of the Embera ethnic group or from the Guyanese by Karen Paulina Biswell and the portrait photography of migrants from Dakar in Milano by Michele Vaccaro show at the same time.

Église in Palermo ist ein international bekanntes Zentrum für Fotografie. Durch Ausstellungen, Publikationen, und Rahmenprogramm präsentiert den Mittelmeerraum als Ort des Diasporischen, wo Wege sich kreuzen und Kultur entsteht.

Six of Swords: Diaspora and Image ist eine Ausstellung mit Karen Paulina Biswell, Iole Carollo, Michele Vaccaro, eine Performance von Rachel Libeskind, und weitere tba, ist eine Ausstellung, die über die Diaspora reflektiert.

Die Arbeiten basieren auf der klassischen dokumentarischen Fotografie, aber hinterfragen ihre Bedeutung, die Macht der Fotografen, die Schaffung von Bildwelten angesichts die Umwelt- und politische Krise.

Die Ausstellung und Performance reflektiert über die Rolle der Fotografie und durch die Fotografie erzeugten Bilder, über ihre Macht und Rezeption, wie diese durch die Diaspora nochmal neu gedacht werden kann.
Zusammen mit Eglise wollen wir aber besonders über das Diasporische im Mittelmeerraum reflektieren, wo sich viele Kulturen kreuzen und sich gegenseitig befruchten. Die Tarotkarte Six of Swords steht für derjenigen, die aus verschiedenen Gründen ihre Heimat verlassen müssen. Es ist eine Karte der kleinen Arkana, die für die Überwindung von Schwierigkeiten, Heilung, Erleichterung und Stabilität steht.

Obwohl alte Fragen über Fotografie und das fotografische Bild gestellt werden, sind es diesmal KünstlerInnen, die in der Diaspora lebten oder erfahren, die solche Fragen antworten oder kontextualisieren.

Es wird über die Probleme der Repräsentation anderer Kulturen diskutiert (der ethnographischen Blick), wie die Arbeit mit der indigenen der Embera Ethnie oder aus den Guyanen von Karen Paulina Biswell und die Porträtfotografie von Migranten aus Dakar in Milano von Michele Vaccaro gleichzeitig zeigen.
